restaurants and good addresses

Two tables above the water, an ice-cream shop, a bar, a grocery. Book ahead: the village is small.

la pergola

A terrace right at the water's edge, fish and seafood, facing the bay. Booking recommended in season; closed in winter.

l'auberge du mérou

Perched above the calanque, Provençal and Mediterranean cooking. Free shuttle from the car park, one phone call away.

le glacier de l'ancre

Artisanal ice cream, waffles and crêpes for the afternoon.

la canne bambou

The locals' bar, next to the pétanque ground. A glass at sunset.

the niolon grocery

Bread orders, fresh produce, sandwiches and quiches for the trails. Do your main shopping before coming down: the nearest supermarket is in Le Rove.

getting around without a car

the côte bleue train

Niolon station is 300 m from the house. About 20 minutes to Marseille Saint-Charles, several trains a day, tickets at the station or on SNCF Connect. In the evening, check the time of the last train back from Marseille.

on foot

La Vesse 5 minutes away, the customs officers' path towards Méjean and l'Érevine, the fort above the village. Everything starts from the house.

by car

Parking at the entrance to the village; in summer, arrive before 10 am. Do not drive down into the calanque: the lanes are narrow and the harbour has no spaces.

on the water

diving

The diving centre occupies the Niolon fort: first dives, courses, wrecks offshore. One of the bay's well-known spots.

snorkelling

A mask and snorkel are enough off the harbour rocks or at La Vesse. In summer, the Carry-le-Rouet marine reserve can be visited with a guide, on registration.

kayak and paddleboard

Méjean is about 45 minutes away by paddle, hugging the coast past La Vesse and Figuerolles.

by boat

Half-day trips from Niolon or L'Estaque, rentals available with or without a licence.

practical questions

Do we need walking shoes?

Yes. The coastal paths are rocky and flip-flops slip. Trainers are fine for La Vesse; bring better for the customs officers' path.

Is there a sandy beach in Niolon?

No: pebbles and rocks. The nearest sandy beach is at Le Rouet, 20 minutes by car. Swimming is unsupervised.

What about when the mistral blows?

Swimming from the rocks becomes dangerous and the sea can pick up in the afternoon. The hikes remain doable. Bring a warm layer for the evening, even in summer.

Should we book the restaurants?

Yes, two to three days ahead in season. The village's two tables are small and in demand.
